BVI Sunset Cruise: Private Dinner Charter Guide

The best hour on the water in the British Virgin Islands is not the one most visitors book. Everybody wants the 10am departure, the snorkel stops, the beach bar at noon. Fair enough. But if you have ever stood on the back of a boat somewhere between Tortola and Peter Island around 6:15pm, with the day-charter fleet already home on their moorings and the light going gold and then orange and then a shade of pink that does not photograph properly, you know the truth. A BVI sunset cruise is the quietest, prettiest, least crowded thing you can do in these islands.

We run our Sunset & Dinner Charters most evenings of the week, and we have watched hundreds of them from the helm. Some are proposals. Some are anniversaries. A surprising number are just two people who have been in a villa all week and want one evening that feels like an occasion. This guide covers how the evening actually works, where you can go for dinner, what it costs, and the handful of practical things worth knowing before you pick a date.

What a BVI Sunset Cruise Actually Looks Like

Our Sunset & Dinner Charters run three to four hours and start at $900. Pricing moves depending on your pick-up location and which dinner destination you choose, which is worth understanding up front: a run from Nanny Cay to Peter Island is a very different amount of fuel and time than a run up to North Sound on Virgin Gorda. The charter includes a professional captain and crew, the sunset cruise itself, your choice of dinner destination, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages onboard, fuel, and the cruising permit. Dinner itself is not included — you order and pay at the restaurant, the same as you would on land.

Our sample itinerary departs from Nanny Cay Fuel Dock A, though we arrange custom pick-up points on request. That flexibility matters more than people expect. If you are staying in Cane Garden Bay, a West End departure saves you a forty-minute taxi ride over the ridge in the dark on the way home.

The shape of the evening is simple. We leave with enough daylight left to run somewhere scenic — usually out through the channel where the islands stack up on the horizon and the water turns that late-afternoon navy. We slow down and drift for the sunset itself. Then we run you into your dinner spot, tie up or drop you at the dock, and wait. When you are done, we bring you home under the stars. On a clear night with no moon, that return leg is genuinely one of the better things about the whole trip. The Milky Way is visible out here in a way it simply is not in most places people fly in from.

When the Sun Actually Sets in the BVI

This is the single most useful planning fact for a sunset cruise, and almost nobody looks it up before booking. The BVI sits at about 18°N, so the seasonal swing in sunset time is modest compared to home — but it is not nothing.

• Early January: sunset lands around 5:54pm. Your whole evening shifts earlier — a 4:30pm departure makes sense, and you are at dinner by 7.
• Mid-August: sunset is closer to 6:46pm. A 5:30pm departure gives you a relaxed run out before the light goes.
• Around the June solstice: the latest sunsets of the year, roughly 6:58pm.

So across the year you are looking at about an hour of drift. What that means practically: in winter, a sunset charter is an early-evening thing and you will be home at a civilized hour. In summer, it is a proper night out. When you enquire, tell us the date and we will give you the actual sunset time and a recommended departure that puts you in open water with fifteen or twenty minutes to spare. We would rather leave a little early and drift than have you watching the good part from behind a headland.

One more note on light: the twenty minutes after the sun drops below the horizon are often better than the sunset itself. The afterglow behind the western islands goes through colours the actual sunset does not. Do not be in a hurry to get to dinner.

Where to Have Dinner: The Real Options

The dinner destination is the part guests overthink, so here is how we frame it. Every option on our list is a place we can reach comfortably inside a sunset charter window, and each one gives the evening a different character. The question is not which restaurant is best. It is what kind of night you want.

Quiet and refined. Cooper Island Beach Club sits on a small island with almost nothing else on it, which is exactly the point. Cardamom & Co. on Scrub Island is another in this category. If your evening is an anniversary and you want to hear each other talk, start here.

North Sound and Virgin Gorda. This is the widest set of choices we offer: The Clubhouse and Bitter End Yacht Club, Saba Rock, Nova, Sugarcane, CocoMaya, Biras Creek, Island Pot, Mangrove, The Restaurant at Leverick Bay, Rosewood Little Dix Bay, and Top of The Baths. North Sound is a longer run, so it prices higher and suits a slightly later, longer evening. It is also, if we are honest, the most spectacular water to be crossing at dusk.

Lively. Norman Island gives you Pirates Bight and the Willy T — the latter being a floating bar with a reputation it has earned honestly. Jost Van Dyke offers Foxy’s, Ivan’s Stress Free Bar, Hendo’s Hideout, Sidney’s Peace & Love, and Tipsy Shark. Pick one of these if the group is celebrating and dinner is meant to turn into something.

Classic BVI. Peter Island’s Drunken Pelican and The Drake Steak House, and Donovan’s Reef. Solid, scenic, no surprises.

Two practical points. First, reservations. Most of these places want a booking, especially in high season, and some of the smaller ones close on particular nights or shift their hours seasonally. Tell us where you want to go when you book the charter and we will help coordinate the timing — but do confirm the restaurant’s current hours directly, because they change. Second, you can absolutely skip dinner. Our booking form has a “Sunset Cruise Only” option, and plenty of guests take it. Two hours of drifting with a drink in hand and no schedule is a perfectly complete evening.

Proposals, Anniversaries and the Reason Most People Book This

We should be straightforward about who books sunset charters. Couples, mostly. Anniversaries, birthdays, proposals, honeymoons, and small groups marking something. Our booking form has an occasion field and a space for celebration details — décor, champagne, a particular song, a specific moment — because the logistics of a surprise are worth getting right in advance rather than improvising at 6pm.

If you are proposing, tell us. It changes how we run the evening. We will position the boat so the light is behind you rather than in your subject’s eyes. We will find a stretch of water with no other traffic. We will know to be somewhere else on the boat at the right moment, and we will know when to reappear with a bottle. A small thing that matters: bring somebody’s phone or camera with a decent low-light mode, and hand it to the crew before the moment. Nobody wants the only photograph of their engagement to be a blurry selfie taken at arm’s length on a moving boat.

How a Sunset Charter Fits Into a Longer Trip

If you are in the BVI for a week, a sunset charter works best as a bookend rather than the main event. Guests who do both a day charter and a sunset charter almost always tell us the same thing: the day trip was the adventure, the evening was the memory.

The pairing we recommend most often is a half day or full day charter mid-trip — snorkelling, beaches, The Baths or the Indians, the full works — and then a sunset charter on your last or second-to-last night. Doing the sunset evening early in the trip is fine too, but there is something right about ending on it. You have spent the week learning the shapes of these islands. On the last evening, you actually recognise what you are looking at.

What we would not recommend is booking a sunset charter on your arrival day. Flights into Beef Island and ferries from St. Thomas both have a habit of running late, and a delayed arrival turns a relaxed evening into a scramble. If your travel day is tight, our private water taxi service is the better use of that first evening — get to your villa without stress, and save the sunset for a day when nothing else has to go right.

Is dinner included in the $900?
No. The charter price covers the boat, crew, beverages onboard, fuel and permit. You pay the restaurant directly for dinner, and gratuity there is at your discretion — 15–20% is customary in the BVI.

What if it rains?
Caribbean rain is usually a fifteen-minute passing squall, not a day-ruiner, and our Axopar has a suntop for exactly that. If the forecast looks genuinely poor, we will talk to you before you leave the dock rather than after. Rescheduling is straightforward.

Can we do a sunset cruise without going to dinner?
Yes, and a good number of guests do. Select “Sunset Cruise Only” on the booking form. It is a shorter, simpler, cheaper evening and it loses nothing that matters.

Which month has the best sunsets?
Honest answer: the light is good year-round, but the most dramatic skies tend to come in the shoulder months when there is enough cloud structure to catch colour.
